Job Description

The UMBC History Department seeks to hire a Historian of Vast Early America for a full-time tenure track position at either the Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor level. We are interested in identifying scholars whose work challenges traditional and conceptual boundaries and are especially seeking scholars whose work draws attention to the agency, humanity, and complexity of marginalized, enslaved, and indigenous peoples. Preference is for those who work on time periods prior to the late eighteenth century since we are looking to complement existing strengths in late eighteenth and nineteenth-century America. Subfields of interest include Indigenous or Native history, Caribbean, borderlands, environment, race, and ethnicity. We especially welcome applicants with experience and interests in Public History or the digital humanities.

UMBC's history department is home to 17 full-time faculty who are teacher scholars. The undergraduate course load is 2/2 in addition to supervision and advising of M.A. students in Historical Studies.

Those applying at the advanced assistant professor level should have teaching experience and a research agenda commensurate to a tenure track professor who has passed a third year review and should be on schedule to go up for tenure with a published monograph in the next 3 to 4 years. Those applying at the Associate Professor level should have already been promoted to Associate rank and should have teaching, academic service, and publications (including a monograph) commensurate with a tenured professor at a research university. Practicing public historians with a portfolio of scholarship will also be considered at either rank.

UMBC is a Carnegie Foundation RI (highest research activity) institution, located in Catonsville, Maryland in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. The University has 14,000 students and routinely ranks as one of the top institutions in the nation for undergraduate teaching and innovation in U.S. News and World Report. UMBC is a Minority Serving Institution and is especially proud of the diversity of its student body, and we seek to attract an equally diverse applicant pool for this position. We have a strong commitment to increasing faculty diversity. Historically underrepresented, excluded, or marginalized groups, veterans, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Please note: Only electronic applications, submitted through Interfolio, will be accepted. Applications should include a letter of interest addressed to the Chair of the Search Committee, Prof. G. Derek Musgrove, that introduces the candidate's research and teaching experience; a curriculum vitae; a statement of how your teaching, research, and/or service contribute to inclusive excellence; one chapter/article length writing sample.

Additional materials, including letters of reference, course syllabi and writing samples will be requested of candidates advancing beyond the initial review of applications. For questions, please contact the Chair of the Search Committee, Dr. Derek Musgrove (derek.musgrove@umbc.edu).

Complete applications received by September 27, 2024, are guaranteed full consideration. UMBC is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
