Job Overview

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in anthropological archaeology whose scholarship focuses on the precolonial archaeology of North America with interests in community-engaged archaeology and collaboration with Native American descendant communities.

The department seeks to expand its growing programmatic and research focus on applied and community-engaged anthropology and archaeology. This position will contribute to strengthening our research profile and expanding training opportunities for students in these areas.

Essential Functions

  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses, such as, but not limited to, Introductory Archaeology, Ohio Valley Archaeology, Cultural Resource and Heritage Management, as well as upper-division courses in the individual's area of expertise. The topics of such classes might include community-engaged archaeology, methodological approaches that complement existing strengths in the department, or thematic areas of interest.
  • Develop and teach an archaeological field school course to train students in archaeological field methods.
  • Develop an externally funded research program.
  • Conduct research in precolonial archaeology of North America and publish research in professional journals and other appropriate outlets.
  • Engage and collaborate with Native American descendant communities in archaeological fieldwork and research.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Expand training opportunities for students in the areas of applied and community- engaged anthropology and archaeology.
  • Contribute service to the department, college, university, and the profession (such as but not limited to faculty or professional organization, committee participation or leadership, and peer-review of research proposals, journal articles, and manuscripts).
  • Participate in curriculum and course development.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to effective date of appointment, applicants must have all of the following:


• PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field.


• Research experience in precolonial archaeology of North America as evidenced by a PhD dissertation or 2 publications in this area.
